Area Artist of the Year 2015: Gay Nardone
Over the course of her 30-plus years as a faculty member at the University of New Hampshire’s Department of Theatre and Dance, Gay Nardone has influenced hundreds of young dancers. Some of these dancers have gone on to perform on Broadway, in national tours, at regional theaters, on film and on television. They have gone on to teach across the country in studios, colleges and conservatories. In addition to teaching jazz and tap, Ms. Nardone instituted the aerial arts program at UNH and has become a recognized leader in bringing this popular form to a university setting. The impact Nardone has had on the dance arts in our region and beyond has been tremendous. Sole City Dance is pleased to honor her for all she has done.
Gay Nardone received her M.F.A. and B.F.A. from Boston Conservatory. She began her career with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and danced on television with the June Taylor Dancers of the Jackie Gleason Show. Nardone has choreographed dozens of operas, musicals and dance concerts for the University. Her choreography can also be seen in Clara’s Dream: A Jazz Nutcracker, performed at Portsmouth’s Music Hall and on tour. Nardone performs with Dean Diggins and Drika Overton as the “Classical Tap Trio”. Her aerial dance program has been featured on WMUR’s Chronicle and in Dance Magazine.
